Borrowers can receive relief after at least 10 years of payments if they originally borrowed $12,000 or less for college. Each additional $1,000 in borrowing adds 12 more months until forgiveness. All borrowers on SAVE receive forgiveness after 20 or 25 years, depending on whether they have loans for graduate school.

Who qualifies for student loan forgiveness?

People who have owed on loans for at least 20 years. If a borrower entered repayment for undergraduate debt 20 years ago or more, they would qualify for full forgiveness. If a borrower of graduate school debt entered repayment 25 years ago or more, they would also qualify. People who took out loans to enroll in “low-value” academic programs.
